Furnace Alarms and Sounds: What You Need to Know

Have you ever heard a strange beeping noise in your Atlanta, Georgia, home and you don’t know where it’s coming from? There’s a good chance it could be coming from your HVAC unit. Some units make noises to alert the homeowner of different things. Here’s a closer look at a few of the different noises common HVAC units will make and what they mean.

Beeping Noise

Any time you notice a frequent beeping noise coming from the furnace, this means something isn’t right and the system is alerting you to an issue. The problem could be major or minor. Some furnaces will beep when the air filter needs to be changed.

Always refer to the owner’s manual to see what a beeping sound means for your specific heating system. If the manual doesn’t offer any answers, you should contact a professional HVAC contractor for a diagnosis and repair.

Whistling

If your furnace ever produces a whistling noise, it is usually indicative of some type of clog. It could be a simple fix like the need for a new filter, or something within the duct system or associated with the blower. If you recently changed the filter, contacting an HVAC professional should be your next step in addressing and solving a whistling issue.

Loud Thuds

Another alarming sound that may come from the furnace is a loud thud. While many furnaces make a thudding noise when they turn on, if it subsides quickly, this is usually no cause for concern. However, if it just recently started or continues, you will definitely want to have it inspected. It could be the result of a faulty electronic ignition, or it could also be a problem with the ductwork. A professional HVAC specialist should inspect and address these issues immediately.
